Ox & Octopus est le projet solo de Jarrod Gawne (The Open Rays, Forêt Marine), auteur-compositeur-interprète, multi-instrumentiste et réalisateur établi dans les Laurentides. Né à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, dans une famille de musiciens, il grandit dans un environnement où la musique n’est pas un métier mais une manière d’habiter le monde.
Très tôt, il comprend que la chanson est un passeport, un espace de connexion, un outil de transformation, un territoire où l’on peut naviguer entre paysages intérieurs et réalités extérieures. En 2008, il s’installe définitivement au Québec, où il poursuit à la fois sa vie artistique et sa carrière d’éducateur spécialisé.
Au contact de personnes vivant des défis en santé mentale et en neurodiversité, Jarrod développe une sensibilité particulière à la vulnérabilité, à la résilience et à la complexité humaine; des expériences qui nourrissent directement son écriture. Pour lui, la musique est un processus organique, il ne fabrique pas des chansons, il les découvre. Un riff apparaît, une phrase surgit, et peu à peu, le sens se révèle comme si la chanson existait déjà et demandait simplement à être mise au monde.
Le nom Ox & Octopus incarne la dualité de cet artiste. Inspiré à la fois par le signe astrologique du Taureau et le Bœuf du zodiaque chinois. Ox symbolise la persévérance, l’endurance et la force tranquille. Octopus évoque quant à lui la polyvalence, la curiosité insatiable et la capacité de toucher à tous les aspects de la création: composition, écriture, enregistrement, production, réalisation et mixage. Ce nom est donc une métaphore d’acceptation, embrasser pleinement ses caractéristiques et en faire un moteur artistique.
Autoproduit, Ox & Octopus revendique un son volontairement vivant, parfois brut, toujours sincère. Entre folk texturé, rock introspectif, élans électroniques et touches de rap old-school, sa musique refuse les moules et privilégie l’authenticité à la conformité. Soutenu par une communauté d’ami(es) musicien(nes) qui enrichissent certaines chansons de leurs couleurs, Jarrod construit une œuvre libre, incarnée et profondément humaine.

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, into a family of musicians, he was raised in an environment where music was never simply a profession, it was a way of being.
Early on, he came to understand that music is a passport to the world, a space for connection, a tool for transformation, a territory where inner landscapes spill over into reality. In 2008, he made Quebec his permanent home, where he continues to nurture both his artistic path and his work as a Special Care Counsellor.
Through close work with individuals navigating mental health challenges and neurodiversity, Jarrod has developed a deep sensitivity to vulnerability, resilience, and human complexity; experiences that directly influence his songwriting. For him, music is an organic process. He doesn’t manufacture songs, he unearths them. Fingers stumble upon a riff, lips pronounce a cryptic phrase, and gradually the meaning reveals itself as though the song already existed and simply needed to be brought into the world.
The name Ox & Octopus embodies the duality of this artist. Inspired by both his astrological sign Taurus and the Ox of the Chinese zodiac, Ox represents endurance, steadiness, and silent strength. Octopus reflects the multifaceted nature of his creative process, an insatiable curiosity and a hands-on approach to every stage of creation: songwriting, recording, production, arrangement, and mixing. The name is thus a metaphor for self-acceptance, embracing one’s inherent traits and transforming them into creative fuel.
Self-produced, Ox & Octopus embraces a sound that is intentionally eclectic, at times raw and always sincere. Travelling through textured folk, introspective rock, electronic ballads, and feel good old-school rap, his music resists categorization and chooses authenticity over conformity. Surrounded by a close community of musician friends who add their voice to select songs, Jarrod crafts a body of work that feels free, embodied, and deeply human.
